Earlier this evening, I was checking out at our local Harris Teeter with a few items for supper and I had Erin and Landon with me. It\u2019s one of my favorite stores and I genuinely enjoy going there to shop. That hasn\u2019t changed, but this exchange happened with a very nice cashier, who I\u2019ll call Janine, as we were finishing up the transaction\u2026<\/p>\n
Janine asks, \u201cMr. Locklair, are you a senior?\u201d<\/p>\n
My head pops up and I look at her, and then her helper, who was suddenly staring at the ceiling, and I start looking at the ceiling…for the cameras, right?<\/span><\/p>\n In a measured tone, I asked her back, \u201cA senior\u2026what?\u201d<\/p>\n Janine: \u201cWell, I just\u2026\u201d I was trying to process this experience and I had the thought, \u201cI won\u2019t be a \u2018Senior’ until Landon is\u2026uh, seven.\u201d That didn\u2019t support my argument as much as I thought, so I kept it to myself. <\/p>\n \u201cJanine, I\u2019m just kidding,\u201d I lied. \u201cWe\u2019re all good \u2013 I really appreciate you looking out for me.\u201d<\/p>\n I called Erin to go stop her little brother from rummaging through the free cookie bin and, as we started walking away, I heard Janine\u2019s helper whisper too loudly to her, \u201cGirl, you just told that man he was OLD! What is wrong with you?\u201d I had to laugh because that\u2019s all I really wanted to tell her, but I think she got the idea.<\/p>\n Folks, just remember that the math doesn\u2019t mean everything \u2014 it\u2019s all about heart. Lord, help us grow old with grace, dignity and tact. \nMe: \u201cI have a THREE year old, see him right there?\u201d
\nJanine: \u201cOh, I thought\u2026\u201d
\nMe: \u201cCareful.\u201d
\nJanine: \u201c\u2026he is so cute.\u201d<\/p>\n
